Through My EyesAuthor: Ruby Bridges(M.V.O.)

Ruby Bridges was born on September 8, 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi. Her parent's names are Lucille and Abon Bridges. The Bridges family consisted of eight children, Ruby being the first-born. When Ruby was four years old she moved to New Orleans with her parents. During the summer, Ruby would return to Mississippi and help her grandparents. All her grandparents were sharecroppers. In the summer she would pick crops or help in the kitchen. In the 1950's-60's African-Americans demanded equal treatment. The civil rights movements came when Ruby was six years old. During this time, children didn't know what racism was; only adults knew about it. When it was time for Ruby to be in first grade she took a test, then later received a call from the NAACP saying she was one of six black children to have the opportunity to attend an all-white school. Not all of these children accepted the offer; only four of the six did.

School integration was a big struggle and an essential part of the civil rights movement. Ruby was the first African-American to attend William Frantz Public School, and she was the first African-American to attend an all-white school in the South. On Ruby's first day at William Frantz, she was escorted to school and home from school by U.S. federal marshals. Ruby was watched and guarded her first two days at William Frantz. Ruby was very brave. Her first grade teacher was Barbara Henry. Mrs. Henry loved and cared about Ruby. She always made Ruby feel welcomed and comfortable. Ruby and Mrs. Henry were like best friends. She influenced Ruby a lot. Ruby was a strong, brave, and sweet girl. Her story inspired many people, and gave other African-Americans hope. Ruby Bridges was a hero.

"My mother brought us up to believe that God is always there to protect us. She taught us there is a power we can pray to anytime, anyplace."(9)
This quote shows that the Bridges family had faith in God. I believe that this is a great concept. Having faith and trust in God makes life a lot easier. With this quote in your mind, all things are possible.

"I would go from one world into another."(49)

I like this quote because it shows that Ruby was open-minded. This quote shows that Ruby was greatly affected by the school integration. Ruby lived two lives. She lived her normal life at home, then she lived a life with her teacher Mrs. Henry.
"Financial help was on its way, fortunately, and it came through the U.S. mail. People from around the country sent gifts and money ... Many Americans wanted to encourage us. The money mad a big difference to my family, and it kept coming for months."(36)

This quote means a lot to me because it shows that people cared about and supported the Bridges family. Support and encouragement helps a lot in making decisions in everyday life struggles. If I lived in this time period I would've believed in school integration, and would risk being taunted.

"... I find that Ruby's story so inspires children. They feel they finally have a hero who is like them. Ruby's story allows children to feel they, too, can do very important things and they, too, can be heroes."(44)
Ruby Bridges' story inspired many people. This quote shows that Ruby's actions made a positive difference in the world. I think what the Bridges family did was right and took courage. The whole family was very brave in doing this action. I believe that this action helped with the struggle of racism during this time period.

"At that moment, it all made sense to me. I finally realized that everything had happened because I was black. I remember feeling a little stunned. It was all about the color of my skin."(50)

This quote affected me greatly. It made me try to put myself in Ruby's shoes, and attempt to understand how she felt at this time. It makes me sad to see this view of such an inspiring girl. When I read this quote I stopped and reread it over and over. This is a powerful quote.
"I now know that experience comes to us for a purpose, and if we follow the guidance of the spirit within us, we will probably find that the purpose is a good one."(61)

Ruby Bridges sums up Through My Eyes with this quote. This quote is very meaningful. Ruby is stating that everything happens for a reason, and in the outcome there is always something positive.

After reading Through My Eyes I have learned that throughout difficult struggles positive things can happen. I've learned that even when you feel like you have had enough and just want to give up, that you should continue to strive for the greatest possibilities and to never give up no matter what. There will be hard times in life, but if you have faith in God everything will be a lot easier. In today's life there is hardly any racism. I can't imagine living during the civil rights movement. Now that I have learned how African-Americans were treated I can't believe how brave certain people in history were. For example: Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges. Their actions made positive differences in the world today.
