" I got a note from Lucy not long after receiving my acceptance letter from Iowa writers' workshop. she said that initially when she heard I had gotten into the workshopshe was sorry, because she want to be the only student there form Sarah Lawrence."(page 2)

This was the start of a BEAUTIFUL friendship between Ann Patchett and Lucy Grealy that would end up lasting a lifetime.
"...Everyone knew Lucy and everyone knew her story: she had a Ewing's sarcoma at the age of nine, had lived through five years of the most brutal radiation and chemotherapy, and then undergone a series of reconstructive surgeries that were largely unsuccessful. The drama of her life, combined with her reputation for being the smartest student in all of her classes, made her the campus mascot, the favorite pet in her dirty jeans and oversixed Irish sweaters."(page 2)

This Quote is important because it describes Lucy and gave the reader some back ground information. Everyone wanted to be Lucy friends, but was it because they liked who she was or liked the fact that she had a story to tell?
"I did Lucy and myself a great disservice our second year at Iowa and left the house on Governor street to move in with my boyfriend, who lived in a small cottage behind a larger house a mile away. This act of packing up and leaving home set in motion a larger mistake that would take years to correct. At the time i thought this was my bid chance for love, that I was doing something very romantic and important, but looking back on it now, it all seems part of a very simple equation: I left the house where I lived with someone who loved me to go to the house of someone who did not love me at all."(page 45)
(image-thumb71.png)
This gives the reader a little insight on what Ann Patchett is like. She is very naive and venerable to love. Most of the time she doesn't know what she is doing and always come back to Lucy.
"I do not remember our love unfolding, that we got to
know one another and in time became friends. I only
remember that she came through the door and it was
there, huge and permanent at first. I felt I had been
chosen by Lucy and i was thrilled. I was twenty-one
years old and very strong. She had a habit of pitching
herself into my arms like a softball without any notice.
She liked to be carried."

" Lucy was in a Fashion Magazine; she was the subject of an entire article in People. one particularly memorable shoot was done in the country and she had her picture taken and draped over the back of a white horse."(page 134)

Lucy worked so hard and so long to be somebody, and she finally got that when she wrote her autobiography and was then famous. She was loving every minute of it and taking it for what it was worth.
"Several months after the publication of Lucy's book, when she was the toast of both popular culture and all things literary, my second novel,Taft, came out..."(page 139)
(n129873.jpg)
After Ann Patchett's second book came out after Lucy autobiography. Taft did not do so well. But it was okay to Ann because Lucy deserved all the fame that came from her book and she needed a reason to shine again. Ann wanted to be there for her all the way.
The novel,Truth and Beauty by Ann Patchett doesn't have much historical meaning since it was written in the 90's. The novel is about the struggles of two young authors trying to make their way in life. Its goes on to tell about Lucy Grealy, Ann Patchett's best friends struggles as she fights cancer.
